Divya Jain, Co-Founder and CEO, SafeducateThe world is changing at a relentless pace. We have already stepped into an age where technological revolution is transforming the way humans interact, live, operate, work and even think. While the adaptation of the new-age technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), big data, blockchain, Augmented Reality (AR), and data science, among others, are adding better efficiency to operations of big and small businesses, it has made almost a majority of occupations technically automatable. This means that most occupations will change, and more people will have to work with technology.

Startups fueling skilling

For the 688 million Indians falling under the working-age category, skill development has become a major requirement. Yet, most of them remain jobless due to lack of mindfulness about the right vocational training and job opportunities. Moreover, for working professionals, advanced skills are crucial to survive the job market today. Realizing the need to prepare our youth for this novel market, skill-giving edu-tech startups are leveraging their revolutionary approaches to empower them with relevant skills and create a robust workforce. They are changing the way youth absorb knowledge by engaging the youth, especially from smaller towns with newer ways like music and Bollywood in a bid to urge them to sign up for skill-based training programs and get access to potential job opportunities. The idea is to enable learners to achieve a sustainable livelihood either by making them job-ready or inculcating in them a spirit to pursue entrepreneurship.

“Equipping youth with the right opportunities by creating a productive workforce proficient enough to meet the demands of local, national and global industries, is the need of the hour”

Triggering entrepreneurship through digital visibility

India remains to be a land of opportunities offering excellent scope for many students, homemakers and young individuals in India who are aspiring to be entrepreneurs. However, despite having innovative ideas, ability to build beautiful products and initiatives taken by the government to promote ease of doing business, they are unable to set up a business online primarily due to the technological barriers and complexities from ecommerce. In fact, new business registrations in India are still not able to match pace with the size of India's economy and the population that has crossed 130 crores.

New-age startups are emerging as key accelerators, making the experience of setting up an online business effortless and holistic. They are providing all-rounded support for everyone who is trying to make an e-commerce presence, thus enabling the online success of small and aspiring entrepreneurs in emerging markets. Meanwhile, the dawn of social commerce startups is further contributing to this cause by empowering micro-entrepreneurs from tier 2 & 3 cities to expand their business and come online. Through such platforms, anyone can engage vernacular audiences through live videos-based shopping, local language voice recognition-based catalog discovery, and Whatsapp like chat/messaging-based checkouts and earn commission on transactions that they facilitate.

Ways to escalate youth employment in India

Job creation in the country can take place with the foundation of new enterprises or the growth of existing firms. While initiatives like StartUp India, Digital India, and access to MUDRA banks among others are already giving an impetus to Entrepreneurial India, equipping youth with the right opportunities by creating a productive workforce proficient enough to meet the demands of local, national and global industries, is the need of the hour. That said, we should also understand that it is not the responsibility of a single body but collaborative efforts of multiple players including the government, industry, and academia to prepare the youth for future jobs. By leveraging their potential, we can definitely achieve large-scale success in the long run and progress towards becoming one of the most successful economies across the globe.
